What is a Timing Belt?

Close up picture of a vehicle's timing belt

Timing belts are also known as cambelts (timing chains for engines with larger bores and strokes) and they are an important component of an internal combustion engine. Timing belts harmonize camshaft and crankshaft rotation. When both work as they should, the valves and pistons operate at peak performance. Valves control air/fuel mixture intake and exhaust gas and push the pistons down as fuel ignites in the combustion chamber. No matter what type of vehicle you own, whether it’s a brand new Volkswagen or an older model from another manufacturer, it must have a properly functioning timing belt.

How Much is a Timing Belt?

When a timing belt is broken, the valves do not open and close when they are supposed to. They’ll hit the pistons, which can lead to costly repairs. It can cost as much as $2,000 or more if there is damage to the valves, water pump, and pistons. If those components were not damaged, Bayside drivers will likely pay approximately $500 to $1,000 with parts and labor costs. According to most vehicle manufacturers, the timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles to 100,000 miles.
