How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire?

Car lifted with a jack with a spare tire leaning on the side of it

How long can I drive on a spare? The team at Platinum Volkswagen has the answer. It is a good idea to replace the spare as soon as you can, but there are some spare tires that last longer than others. A full-size spare gives you more time and mileage, but most smaller space-saver tires should be driven no more than 70 miles. Learn about spare tire safety with Platinum Volkswagen today.

Space-Saver Spare Tire

If your spare tire is smaller than your normal tires, that means that you have a space-saver spare tire. It is also known as a “donut” spare. Many new cars come with space saver tires, but there are some restrictions on their use.

  • Do not drive over 50 miles per hour.
  • Don’t drive on this type of tire for more than 70 miles.
  • These tires provide less traction, so they may not be as safe on some surfaces.

Your space-saver spare will list any additional usage restrictions on the tire itself. Be sure to replace this type of tire as soon as possible by visiting our service center.

Full-Size Spare

A full-size spare is not quite as common as the donut spare, but you may have one if you drive a truck or SUV. It can be used longer than a space-saver spare, but it is still important to have the tire replaced as quickly as you can. Because your spare tire is probably not the same brand as the rest of the tires on your vehicle, your car may not be able to handle at its best. Traction may be poor because this tire does not have the same level of wear if it is brand new.

What is Run-Flat Tire?

Run-flat tires can maintain pressure even after a puncture. Here are a couple of advantages and disadvantages of this option:

  • Remains inflated for about 50 miles following a puncture
  • Tougher than a space-saver tire or full-size spare
  • Often costs more than a standard tire

If you have run-flat tires and your tire pressure monitor shows that it’s running low, pull over when you can to take a look at the tire. If you can see a visible puncture on a run-flat tire, bring the vehicle in for a tire replacement.
